Mountain Association Seeks Lending Assistant

The Mountain Association seeks to hire a Lending Assistant to help the organization implement our lending work to reach our impact and deployment goals as a member of the Lending Team. The Lending Assistant supports the work of the Lending Team and will also collaborate with other Mountain Association staff on other organizational initiatives as needed.


The Mountain Association invests in people and places in Eastern Kentucky to advance a just transition to a new economy that is more diverse, sustainable, equitable and resilient. Our Lending team offers loans to existing and startup businesses and organizations. We are a Community Development Financial Institution and a non-profit, so we can offer greater flexibility and lend to those who may not otherwise qualify. Our Business Support program connects business owners and nonprofit leaders to consultants who can help them succeed. Our Energy experts help businesses, nonprofits, public agencies and homeowners find much-needed energy savings through utility bill analysis, on-site energy efficiency and solar assessments, financing and grant application support.

The Mountain Association also engages in research, communications and advocacy for policy and narrative change, and works with partners on a variety of projects to demonstrate what’s possible in Eastern Kentucky.

Position Description

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

Loan Support Services

  • Conduct initial screening and client intakes by phone, in person and electronically.
  • Assist Lending Team members with micro-loan proposal development.
  • In collaboration with Lending Team members, contact borrowers to complete applications, collect necessary documentation, participate in site visits, and help borrowers meet all requirements of the program.
  • Help applicants locate other funding or technical assistance sources if the Mountain Association is not a good fit.
  • Collaborate with Portfolio Support Team to ensure all closing items are met.

Reporting and Administrative Responsibilities

  • Respond to general inquiries, schedule appointments and send applications to potential clients.
  • Use Mountain Association data management systems to track key borrower and technical assistance information.
  • Support proposal development, grant reporting and internal reporting as needed.
  • Office administration and general office tasks including monitoring and responding to incoming mail and email, answering phone calls, filing, and organizing office space.

Customer Relations

  • Maintain consistent and positive working relationships with Mountain Association borrowers and connect them to Mountain Association’s Business Support Services, Energy Team and other resources to help them succeed.
  • Assist with Business Support Services engagements, including assessment of clients’ suitability for additional assistance and/or referral.
  • Assist with borrower collection tasks as assigned in support of Lending or Portfolio Support Team members.

Marketing & Outreach

  • Assist in connecting with new lending clients.
  • Implement marketing strategies and follow-up including contact mailings, updating referrals in the database, basic social media monitoring and posting, and maintaining supplies of marketing materials.
  • Assist with training and other public-facing programs as needed including contacting clients, preparing materials, scheduling speakers, setting up appointments and coordinating logistics.
  • Conduct basic market research as needed to support the Lending Team.
  • Communicate timely, clearly, and with good humor, both within and outside the Mountain Association.
  • Maintain professional office presence.


  • Understand and support the organizational mission and strategies as presented in the Mountain Association’s five year plan.
  • Engage with and participate in the Mountain Association’s journey to increase diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility both in our workplace and our work.
  • Participate in regular Lending Team meetings and Mountain Association staff meetings.
  • Practice safety in all aspects of the job.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications and Characteristics

Knowledge and experience: 

  • BA or BS in business, accounting or related field; OR Associate’s degree and two years related experience; OR equivalent combination of education and related experience totaling 4 years.

  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directed and execute successful projects such as those described in the responsibilities above.
  • Willingness to travel for day and occasional overnight stays within the region.
  • Strongly motivated and committed to positive social change.

Technology and software: 

  • Strong computer skills, in particular spreadsheets and word processing.


  • Strong writing skills and the ability to write clearly for a general audience.
  • Good telephone and interpersonal communication skills and the capacity to work constructively in teams.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications and Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of and experience in Appalachia or Kentucky.

Additional Information

This full-time position offers a competitive salary, with a range of $35,000 – $42,000, depending on experience, along with a generous benefits package. This position’s location is flexible between Mountain Association’s offices in Berea, Paintsville, and Hazard, Kentucky. Because of the current public health emergency, at this time Mountain Association staff have the option to work in our office buildings if they’re fully vaccinated and the option to work from home regardless of vaccination status.
