Doug Adkins at Cane Creek Calls in Letcher County has been building game calls for over 29 years.
He has been hunting and fishing since he was a kid and has always had a great love for the outdoors. He started calling in competition in 1990 when he linked up with a large call company in New York.
Doug was on their pro staff and calling team for a year. Since he had trouble winning with their calls, he decided to start building his own. When he began winning contests under their name but using his calls, he knew he had to do something.
In 1991, Cane Creek Calls was born, named after the road where he lives on Cane Branch.
All calls are built in house in Doug’s shop in the small town of Jenkins, Kentucky. Doug and a few employees hand stretch mouth calls and build all wood pots, strikers and box calls in their woodworking shop. They specialize in custom game calls, including wild turkey, deer, elk, predator, and accessories.
In 2019, Doug worked with consultant Malcolm Wilson through MACED’s technical assistance program to build an updated, more efficient website for online sales.
The new website prominently features testimonials and YouTube videos which are critical to marketing the calls.
Doug said the ease of the online sales system allows him to save time working on the computer and more time on building calls, which is where his heart is.
