Highlander Center Internships: Apply Now!

Our friends at the Highlander Research and Education Center in New Market, TN are looking to fill three open internship positions — applications are due February 13, so spread the word to anyone you think might be a good fit!

Highlander Internships 2012

We have three internship openings for 2012.  Our schedule for selection is:

–          Feb.  15  Letters of interest and resumes to swilliams@highlandercenter.org

–          Feb. 16-29 Process applications

–          March 1  Complete selection, notify all applicants

General information about Highlander internships:

These positions all provide a weekly stipend, housing,  mentoring and support for educational goals of internships.  We work to provide a valuable rich learning experience and also to connect applicant interests and skills with the positions we have available each year.   We also have students and volunteers come for stays at Highlander, in order to provide more people an intensive chance to learn and contribute at Highlander Center.   

Openings for positions at Highlander in 2012:

Appalachian Youth Leadership, Policy and Network Support

We are looking  for a young person (under 30)  from the Central Appalachian region to help assist with Highlander’s work in the Central Appalachian Regional Network, with policy work on broadband and local assets and support of our Stay Together Appalachian Youth leadership institute as well as project and other Appalachian and Southern work to support leaders in the region. 

Seeds of Fire – youth programming

We are looking for  two 3 month interns or one six month intern available from May to October to assist with our youth, young adult and inter-generational work.  This person will assist with:

–Recruiting, preparation, the week-long training and follow-up for the Highlander Seeds of Fire program,  a week-long training for teenagers involved in groups working on education and juvenile justice

–Provide support for Highlander Children’s Justice Camp, a weeklong camp for 7-11 year olds in June

–Help with Appalachian STAY summer institute and other Highlanders programs, activities and minicamps as needed

Communities Creating Healthy Environments (CCHE) Internship

We are looking for a 4-6 month intern, to start after March 1st,  to support our CCHE work as well as to help Highlander increase education relating to food and land with groups coming to the center. This internship will support Highlander’s work relating to food justice , healthy communities , language justice and other documentation and education projects.  Communities Creating Healthy Environments or CCHE is a national capacity-building initiative to support diverse, community-based organizations and indigenous groups with proven track records in developing and organizing for effective, culturally competent policy initiatives that address the root causes of childhood obesity at the local level. Highlander is one of twelve technical assistance organizations taking part in this initiative along with 23 grantees.  To find out more about CCHE go to http://ccheonline.org/home

  • Why Highlander?
  • What do you see as the role of Popular Education in our society?
  • What are your specific community organizing interests?
  • How do you see your interests and the work of Highlander connecting?   Please let us know which internships you are interested in.
  • What do you feel you can learn here?
  • Where do you see some hope for change in our society?
  • What community-based work have you done, and/or what community-based organizations have you been involved in?
  • Do you have specific skills to offer?
  • Do you have your own transportation?
