Strengthening Local Food Networks across Appalachia: An Appalachian Regional Commission Workshop on Sustainable Agriculture and Local Food Systems

March 11, 2011 · 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. · Fairmont, West Virginia

Interest in sustainable agriculture is putting the Appalachian Region's rich agricultural life and diverse food assets on the map. Across the Region, communities are developing partnerships to take advantage of the economic opportunities this approach offers. The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) is convening a series of workshops to help develop strategies to grow local food networks through regional collaboration.

ARC welcomes your participation in the second of these workshops, in Fairmont, West Virginia, on March 11.

Workshop topics will include:

"Farm to Consumer: The Food Supply and Distribution Conundrum"

"Increasing the Yield: Supporting Agri-preneurs"

"Shared Soil: Appalachian Regional Collaboration"

Workshop presenters and moderators will include:

  • Allen Arnold, Collaborative for the 21st Century Appalachia
  • Cindy Martel, West Virginia Department of Agriculture
  • Mary Hunt-Lieving, C.W. Benedum Foundation
  • Anthony Flaccavento, SCALE, Inc.
  • Dale Hawkins, Fish Hawk Acres

Where:The Falcon Center, Fairmont State University/Pierpont Community and Technical College Campus, 1201 Locust Avenue, Fairmont, West Virginia.



Cost:$20; includes an "Appalachian Foodways Luncheon" prepared by chef Brian Floyd, chef Jay Mahoney, and students in the Pierpont Culinary Academy.



How to Register:Reply to events@arc.gov with the following information: Participant name, email address, and phone number. Workshop participants are asked to contribute $20 via check or money order (payable to Pierpont Community and Technical College) to defray the cost of lunch and refreshments.
