Tornado Relief: How You Can Help

March 5, 2012

Share:

We hope each of our readers is safe and sound following last week's extreme weather — for those of you in a position to help out those affected by the tornadoes and storms, please check out this detailed list of how to contribute from our friends at Appalshop/WMMT:

All of us at WMMT have the folks affected by this weekend’s tornadoes in our thoughts and hearts this Monday morning.  Friday’s storms wrought surreal, awful devastation throughout the state, including significant portions of many counties in or near our listening area–Bath, Johnson, Laurel, Lawrence, Magoffin, Menifee, Martin, and Rowan.  There aren’t words to describe this sort of thing, so all we can say is that our thoughts and prayers are with you.  For those who wish to help, there are a number of ways to get involved:

For those in our Kentucky listening area, Willa Johnson is helping to co-ordinate an incredible local relief effort.  More details can be found on the Relief for West Liberty facebook page; Willa will be working with local churches, businesses and individuals throughout the area to collect items to send to the hard hit area of West Liberty.

Items needed are:
Any and All cleaning supplies
Baby Items (diapers, food, bottles, etc)
Food
Water
Batteries
Coats and gloves
Totes/Storage for people to collect their belongings in

Also pet supplies are a great donation, for folks who are helping shelter animals during this.

If you’d like to send money, info on where to send it can be found at the effort’s facebook page.

The Red Cross is in the area and accepting donations. You can visit redcross.org, call 1-800-RED-CROSS, or text 90999 on your cell phone to make a quick $10 donation.

The Front Porch Restaurant in Morehead, KY will be holding nightly benefit concerts each evening this week, with an optional $5 cover donation in addition to portion of sales going to relief efforts in Morgan and Menifee counties.  Check out thefrontporchmorehead.com over the coming hours and days as a schedule is put together.  If you are a musician and want to help out, you can contact Scott Moore either on facebook or by phone at (606)776-0434.

For those wishing to donate or volunteer directly with Kentucky Emergency Management, that can be done here.

Finally, if any of you have any relief efforts you’d like help in publicizing, get in touch with us at (606) 633-0108, at wmmtfm@appalshop.org, or leave the information in the comments section to this post.  Hopefully, this can be an ongoing list of ways that folks can help out.
